Curly Hair Types Chart: Understanding Your Curls with Aroma Curls

At Aroma Curls, we believe that every curl tells a unique story. Understanding your curl pattern is the first step toward achieving healthy, defined, and beautiful hair. That’s where the curly hair types chart comes in - it helps you identify your curl type and choose the right care routine.

Curly hair is generally divided into four main categories:

Type 1 (straight), Type 2 (wavy), Type 3 (curly), and Type 4 (coily/kinky). Since we specialize in curls, let’s focus on Types 2, 3, and 4.

Type 1 (straight)

Straight hair sits flat from root to tip with no visible curl pattern. It appears smooth and shiny but can become oily quickly due to natural oils spreading easily.

1A: Very straight, fine, and soft with little volume
1B: Straight with more body and slight thickness
1C: Mostly straight with some bends and more volume

For straight hair, lightweight shampoos and volumizing products work best. Avoid heavy oils or creams that can make hair look greasy. At Aroma Curls, we recommend using gentle, sulfate-free formulas to keep your hair fresh, light, and full of shine.

Type 2: Wavy Hair

Wavy hair sits between straight and curly. It forms loose “S” shapes and tends to be more prone to frizz.

  • 2A: Light waves, fine texture, easy to straighten
  • 2B: More defined waves with slight frizz
  • 2C: Thick, coarse waves that almost form curls

For wavy hair, lightweight products like curl-enhancing sprays and mousses work best. At Aroma Curls, we recommend avoiding heavy creams that can weigh your waves down.

Type 3: Curly Hair

This is where true curls begin. These curls range from loose loops to tight corkscrews and usually have more volume.

  • 3A: Large, loose curls with natural shine
  • 3B: Springy ringlets with more density
  • 3C: Tight curls with lots of volume and shrinkage

Type 3 curls need moisture and definition. Hydrating creams, leave-in conditioners, and gentle styling gels help maintain shape and reduce frizz. Regular deep conditioning is key to keeping these curls soft and manageable.

Type 4: Coily or Kinky Hair

Type 4 hair has the tightest curl pattern and is often the most fragile. It shrinks significantly and requires extra care.

  • 4A: Soft, defined coils with visible pattern
  • 4B: Z-shaped bends with less definition
  • 4C: Very tight coils, often with minimal visible pattern

These hair types thrive on moisture-rich products. Butters, oils, and deep conditioners are essential. Protective styles and low manipulation routines help prevent breakage and retain length.

Special Curly Hair Types to Know

Beyond the standard chart, some curl patterns deserve special mention:

  • Mixed Curl Patterns: Many people have more than one curl type on their head (e.g., 3A at the front and 3C at the back). This is completely normal and requires a customized routine.
  • High Porosity Curls: Hair that absorbs moisture quickly but loses it just as fast. These curls benefit from sealing oils and protein treatments.
  • Low Porosity Curls: Hair that resists moisture absorption. Lightweight, water-based products and heat (like steam) help products penetrate better.
